His sapphire eyes are sparkling as he brushes my blonde hair out of my eyes. Tobias says, “You know, it’s strange. When I first saw you, I knew you had potential. But I wasn’t sure how far you could be pushed before you’d break, to be honest. But now, here you are, tough as nails.” His lips curl into his familiar smile. Continue reading “Fearless” »

In 2011 American writer Veronica Roth published a novel about the adventures of a teenage girl Beatrice Prior living in a post-apocalyptic world of Chicago called Divergent. Gaining great popularity, the author published two other books to continue the story of Beatrice – Insurgent and Allegiant. This trilogy later received the continuation; a collection of stories entitled Four that describe events from the perspective of a main hero of the trilogy. The world of Beatrice Prior, who is later called Triss, is separated from the rest of the planet due to some chemical attacks in the past.
People live in Chicago encased in a great fence and are not allowed to leave the city. They have created a new form of society – they are differentiated by their personal traits of characters. Five factions that regulate people’s lives, intentions and actions have been elaborated. Every resident of the city is obliged to join one of these groups when they become sixteen-year-old. You have to choose between five factions – Amity unites people who want to lead a peaceful and calm life, Candor is chosen by those for whom the highest priority in life is honesty, Abnegation allures people that value needs of others first, Erudite is for the smart and knowledgeable people, and the last faction, Dauntless is destined for courageous individuals.
These groups are in charge of different services in the city. For example, the city is ruled by the so-called Council of Fifty which is made from the members of Abnegation – they are incorruptible and altruistic. Members of Erudite faction are scientists, Dauntless represent the law enforcement, Amity representatives are caretakers, and people from Candor are lawyers. During a special aptitude test, a machine decides on the basis of memories and decisions of a person to which faction they should belong. You can agree with the test or not – in any case; you will have to select your faction at the Choosing Ceremony. If not, such person becomes a social outcast forced to live in poverty being a functionless.
Triss’s parents belong to the Abnegation faction, and they hoped that she would share the same values. This is not what Triss wants, but she has a lot of doubts about her future. Hoping that an aptitude test will help her, Triss becomes even more confused as the test shows that she has inclinations to three factions – she is brave, smart and modest. And that is something unbelievable! The girl has always thought that there is only one way in life. She finds out from her examiner that she is a Divergent, a unique person that can use several features of her character. And this woman also warns her that information about her examination has to be kept in secret – every Divergent is haunted by authorities being considered a threat to the society.
Understanding that her life is not going to be easy, Triss decides to leave Abnegation and join Dauntless while her brother Caleb opts for Erudite. And the process of acceptance to the faction begins – exhausting training, numerous evaluations and constant pressure. Among dozens of candidates, the best ten will be granted the right to enter that faction. Triss gets along with many new people like Al, Christina, Will and Tobias Eaton, who is called Four, her instructor. Triss notices that something strange is happening inside the factions, political intrigues are becoming more and more sophisticated. One day it leads to the complete genocide of Abnegation form the hands of Dauntless. What actually caused them to slaughter all these people and why Triss and Four managed not to become its part?
