Emma Bloom was by no means naïve. She had a sort of burning passion for the truth, despite its harsh and sometimes cruel nature. She didn’t care how much it hurt…she wanted, no, needed the truth. Emma of all people knew that one terrible burn healed faster than multiple small burns. So she made a point of ignoring her own sensitivity and instead focusing on honesty. She could play with fire without fear. There were only two times in which the hurt could not be healed. Both were moments that she wished she could forget, but knew she would always remember. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is an American best-seller written by Ransom Riggs. Full of horror and suspense, the story tells about the life of strange children with supernatural powers. Or the peculiars! The most interesting part of the book is the collection of bizarre vintage photos collected by the author and used as illustrations in the novel.
During his entire childhood, Jacob Portman has always loved his grandpa Abe and his fantastic stories. Abe Portman was an orphan and spent his young years in Europe. He was always telling Jacob stories about his life with other children in Miss Peregrine’s orphanage for peculiar children in Whales. He called his friends peculiar and showed their photos – invisible boy, flying girl, strong girl and others. All of them had unique supernatural abilities as well as Abe himself. Abe has warned Jacob to stay away from monsters that look like humans but are hollow inside. Jacob believed his grandpa till he has shown the photos to his classmates who laughed at him. This was a painful experience for Jacob – he stopped believing Abe.
Jacob’s fifteen and Abe calls him mumbling something about terrible creatures; Jacob, and his dad don’t pay attention to this. After arriving to check how’s grandpa, Jacob finds him in the forest without eyes and Abe dies in his arms saying mysterious words right before passing away. And for a minute or two, Jacob witnesses a terrible monster with a couple of long creepy tentacles – the same as Abe has always described. Jacob is sure that this creature has murdered his granddad and tries to persuade others in this.
No one believes him and no one has seen this creature. His parents send him to a psychiatrist to discuss Jacob’s visions and depression. Dr. Golan advises Jacob to visit the island where his grandpa’s childhood passed and to seek some answers. After arriving on Cairnholm Island, Jacob starts to search the orphanage where Abe lived. He comes across an old neglected house – during the last search in the house, he sees a girl who asks to follow her. They crawl through a cave and to his big surprise, Jacob can see the same house but in a perfect condition. This is Miss Peregrine’s orphanage with all its tenants.
Jacob meets Alma Peregrine and peculiar children who look the same as on Abe’s photos. Among them, Jacob meets Bronwyn Bruntley, a girl with a supernatural physical power, Claire Densmore with a mouth at the back of the head, Emma Bloom who can create fire with her bare hands, Olive Elephanta who is lighter than air and many others. Miss Peregrine reveals to Jacob that everything Ave has been telling him is true and all the children there are old Abe’s friends. Their existence is possible due to a time loop created by Miss Peregrine. If you live in a time loop, you don’t age. Miss Peregrine is a Ymbryne – a peculiar able to produce time loops and adjust the time to hide peculiar children from hollowgasts. These are the monsters that murdered Jacob’s granddad.
The biggest delicacy for them is peculiar children’s eyes – they give them the energy to transform into Wights. These creatures remind humans, they can talk and think, and their distinctive feature is completely white eyes. Jacob finds out that he is also a peculiar – he can see hollowgasts, while others can’t, and even control them. Unfortunately, just after a couple of days, peculiar children are forced to leave Miss Peregrine’s orphanage and time loop in order to save Ymbrynes, other peculiar children, and the world.
