Modern technologies are developing at full speed, and art doesn’t remain behind. Homestuck is an interesting hybrid of interactive webcomics and flash games created by MS Paint Adventures. This is a collective term used to name several webcomics created, illustrated and animated by Andrew Hussie. These comics were originally made in Microsoft Paint (yes, it’s not a mistake) and later converted into Adobe Photoshop and Flash Player. This comic even had the music created for it which can be found on a Bandcamp.
Homestuck is the fourth comics drawn in style of text-based adventure games. The comic includes animated and static pictures, instant message logs and games made with Adobe flash. Every update of the story is suggested by readers themselves. Homestuck’s story is extremely meaningful, features a lot of diverse characters and unexpected plot twists.
The story dwells on a bunch of teenagers who have an evil plan to destroy this world. John Egbert, a 13-year old teenager, is trying to play a new video game called “Sburb” on April, 13th. It’s actually his birthday. He received a beta copy of this new game via email. The consequences of installing and playing this game on his computer were disastrous in reality – a real meteor shower fell on his house. Thank God, he managed to survive with the help of unknown forces which transported him into another dimension. His friends Rose, Dave and Jade, who are playing this game, found out that they have caused the ruination of the entire planet, and they have done that completely by accident. Now they should play the game to build a new world. Having the real-life effects, this game allows players to manipulate and modify space and matter as they please. But what results does this game appear to have?
The fun continues, and the characters found themselves harassed by twelve Internet trolls. They have already played this game, and during the communication, John came to know that these trolls were not humans at all. And the “troll” is the name of their species. They explain to humans what happened with their world and how they ended up in a game. The two sides get along pretty well – the troll even assisted in the creation of a new universe for humans. But careless actions of one of the characters gave birth to a terrible monster, Jack Noir – this triggered the doomed game session consequences of which can be lethal for humans. John and his friends didn’t panic and managed to find a solution. Special game function called “scratch” allows humans to reset that dreadful session and destroy the monster.
It’s not the end of adventures. Main characters swapped with their ancestors that resulted in a new ark of events where John’s grandmother, Jane, is 15-year old again and she starts her own line of events. She unites with her friends to continue the game while her grandson, other humans, and trolls leap to the new game session in the future. The story seems endless as it has a great number of bizarre events ahead. All these events were proposed by the readers and fans of the story for some time until it was complicated to make it logical.
Nowadays, millions of Homestuck fans are wandering in various universes and galaxies. Whether or not the story of a restless John Egbert will continue, it has already had a great impact on readers worldwide.
