Video Games Cats or simply VG Cats is a hilarious comedy webcomic that was drawn by a cartoonist Scott Ramsoomair in Canada. This comic differs from all other comics of this type as it has no particular plot or storyline, yet the general idea and the same characters appear regularly in different stories. Plus, it’s about cats. The common idea of the whole work is to depict modern video games and trends in the gaming industry is a satirical way showing the absurdity of different gaming topics and plots. So there isn’t a strict storyline but a set of jokes, mocks, and different types of humor which make this series outstanding. Mostly, these stories include two witty human-like cats, Aeris and Leo Leonardo III.
Aeris is a she-cat with pink fur and explosive character who likes to argue with her companion cat, Leo. Typically, she gets annoyed quickly by everything, the most by Leo, who is her childhood friend. She considers him to be the king of idiots. His stupidity drives her mad, and it becomes impossible for her to tolerate, though she really likes him. Sometimes she can be so frustrated by his behavior that great changes can be provoked. For instance, one time Leo pissed her off tremendously in some series – she managed to travel back in time to prevent his birth and eventually “abort him from time.” Why are they together? They happen to be united by their unhealthy passion for playing computer games.
The moment that changed their relationship for the better happened when Leo took some additional weird jobs like shoveling Donkey Kong’s feces to present Aeris a new exclusive video game. She wanted to buy that game many months but couldn’t afford it. Her companion, Leo Leonardo III is a cat with a grey fur that was named after the real cat of the cartoonist. Leo was born a bit retarded – it doesn’t prevent him from living life to the fullest. He knows how to feed, wash, clean, and take care of himself without the help of others. He met Aeris for the first time in their primary school and managed to save her from a big bully called Solid Snake. From that time they became inseparable – though Aeris would love to.
The author decided to depict himself in the series and created the character that resembles him. His alter ego, PantsMan is a necessary superhero that has an interesting way to hide his supernatural powers by wearing pants or even boxers on his head – hence the name. During the day, he is a rich comic writer. At night he becomes an incompetent and lazy nerd trying to save the world in a very weird manner. He likes video games too much and suffers from low self-esteem after his girlfriend broke up with him – he was making strange cat puppets. If PantsMan is able to spot the light type of vodka somewhere around, he immediately gets rid of his pants and becomes Peter Pantsless losing all his powers. If he needs more support and confidence, happens all the time, he wears a pair of jeans around his neck which form a cloak with two tails.
Scott Ramsoomair has a friend, Chris Boe, who created an animated episode based on this webcomic in 2006. This comic series is connected with three other web creations of Scott Ramsoomair – Bad Mushrooms which tells the story before the VG Cats, Adventure Log is dedicated to Final Fantasy XI and is an official webcomic of this series, and Super Effective which is a parody of extremely popular Pokemon series.
