Everyone was tired. Things were looking grim, though it was debatable on which side wasn’t looking so good. The spirits of the dead were floating around, hissing at the remaining three even though none could hear them. The three survivors were the veteran, the serial killer, and the jester. None of them were speaking. The veteran was too tired to go on alert for tonight, leaving him to the killer’s mercy should they decide to lynch jester. The serial killer on the other hand didn’t want to vote in general. He had a feeling the veteran was desperate to lynch the jester and pray the lunatic wouldn’t haunt him. Nevertheless, both didn’t look forward to the coming night. Continue reading “Decisions, Decisions” »

Are you such a good liar that people believe all the time? Can you tell when somebody else is deceiving you? In such case, an online game Town of Salem is a perfect one – it will challenge your abilities to make up various lies to convince other competitors in your rightness. This game was inspired by the widely known card game Mafia where there are multiple character roles to play as well as Salem Witch Trials, a process when people were burnt at stake for witchcraft. The game consists of 26 common roles and 7 unique ones – you can be whoever possible every time you play. From 7 to 15 players are involved who are later subdivided into three distinct houses – the Town, the Mafia, and Neutrals.
Remember, your main aim is to survive the game! At the beginning of a game, every player is to pick up a card where your role abilities are described. A role is an individual ability to do something special that other players can’t, depending on your profession and chosen alignment. When all the players are divided into the alignments, you already know what your mission will be. The principal idea is to conduct a trial on a player, prove them guilty or innocent plus to stay alive during the night time.
There are two significant stages in the game – day and night. Each period lasts a certain amount of time and has its own peculiarities and active roles. Daytime starts with a brief discussion and vote stage when players agree upon the settings of this particular game and whom to trial. Each player is voting against any another one, but this means they will be murdered. At least more than a half of all players should support this idea of voting against. All trials are conducted by the Town which has all necessary roles for a decent trial – two town investigators, a jailor, town protective, sheriff, mayor, doctor, medium, vampire hunter, etc. Players with these roles decide whether or not someone is guilty.
To protect themselves, victims are to initiate the defense stage. During this phase, the convicted has only 20 seconds to prove their innocence to other players. And the members of the Town have 30 seconds to give a verdict about the destiny of the defendant. They can vote the defendant to be guilty, innocent or to abstain. If proven innocent, a new vote is initiated to murder another victim. If proven guilty, this player is sentenced to death and has only 5 seconds to say their last words. After a player dies, they can become a spectator to observe the game, sometimes even intervening if their role allows them to. Only three trials can take place during the day – after the third one, the night begins, and the Mafia wakes up.
If the Town members are decent citizens, the Mafia, on the contrary, unites criminals and bad guys. By the way, all Mafia gangsters know who belongs to their alignment while the Town isn’t aware of the players’ roles. When it’s night time, all roles have 35 seconds to use their special abilities. A doctor can heal, a serial killer can stab, a vampire can drink blood, etc. but only the Mafia can communicate during the night time. Neutrals are divided into four major types – those players can be serial killers, werewolves, arsonists, vampires, etc. There are two roles that should survive till the end of the game, the Benign Survivor and the Evil Witch but they can’t make the Town theirs.
So are you ready to do your best to survive?
