Pixar Animation Studio is famous for its hilarious cartoons with engaging characters and thrilling plot. In 2015 a new animated comedy film appeared on the screen directed by Pete Docter and Ronnie del Cramen – Inside Out. The general idea is to show how different emotions can influence our behavior and decisions, especially in a teenage period – even the smallest thing can make us extremely sad or happy. And what if these emotions are, in fact, some small creatures living in our head and having a special panel that can control our mood? This is exactly what is happening with Riley Andersen, an eleven-year-old girl who has to leave her favorite state of Minnesota and move to San Francisco with her parents as her father was given a new job. She is not very excited about that but has to other chance than to agree.
Five basic emotions are very strong in our mind – Sadness, Joy, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. And these are the characters whose personifications live in Riley’s head. Joy is responsible for making her happy and cheerful, Fear teaches in what situations to behave carefully, Disgust prevents her from doing or eating things that can harm her, and Anger makes her life plain and fair. Sadness is the most troublesome of them. She doesn’t believe that there is any purpose of her existence. They try to help her adjust to a new home, neighborhood, school, and people. They have access to a special console that controls the level of different emotions the girl feels. Getting older, Riley’s emotions become memories which are stored in a certain place, the long-term memory.
They have the form of colorful orbs and should be taken to her long-term memory very night. Among them, five core emotions are the strongest one – they influence her personality and attitude to the life in general. They have the form of floating Islands of Personality representing those events that are dear and precious to her – Family Island, Hockey Island, Friendship Island, Honesty Island, and Goofball Island. For other people that can differ, but in Riley’s head, the emotion of Joy is the leader whose controls the console and determines girl’s mood. Joy has been in charge almost eleven years and is sure that Riley will always stay positive and active girl with a lot of dreams, hopes, and plans. The problems started when her family moved to San Francisco.
Everything went wrong from the first moment – the house her family bought is old and grim, all their furniture and belongings went to the wrong place, her father is constantly nervous because of his new job, and her parents begin to quarrel a lot. This affects Riley very much, and Joy is being misplaced from her positive near the console – Sadness now is ruling Riley’s emotions. And that turns out to be a real catastrophe – Sadness is given too much power and makes all of Riley’s precious memories upsetting. Trying to stop the destruction caused by Sadness, Joy accidentally locks herself and Sadness out of the main console together with core memories. That is very dangerous for Riley – the whole system of values in her head begins to demolish. All Riley’s good memories about her parents, friends, hobbies, and other things that brought her happiness are now practically destroyed. Joy should find a way to make everything right; otherwise, something terrible will happen with Riley’s personality.
