Thor is a huge personality in Norse mythology. His powers were known everywhere and his father Odin reigned over all the known and the unknown. Thor was an heir to Asgard, the most prosperous realm where Odin ruled himself. Other realms consider the Asgardians superior to them in both technology and power. This results either in submission and peaceful coexistence or subversive actions to destroy Odin and his country. The galaxy accepts the realm of Asgard as the ultimate peacekeeping power of the Nine realms. It is obvious that the Thor story arc was heavily influenced by the old Norse tales.
Earth and human population lives in Midgard, and Jotunheim is the home realm of the Jotuns – frost giants with blue skin that desire to subjugate Asgard and restore their power.
Other realms are not covered as well as the mentioned three because they do not have a full feature in the film.

Thor was released in theaters in 2011, however the story is set in 2010. We are at first presented a quick backstory of the events that happened a millennium ago as Odin fights the giants of Jotunheim and defeats them, taking away the Casket – an artifact that is the source of Jotun power. Odin, however did not limit himself to just taking away the Casket. He also took away Loki, the infant Jotun to raise him as an Asgardian. When the young Asgardian prince finds out about his true origin, this makes him angry and confused. Add this to his desire to be the king instead of Thor and his skills in mischief, you will get a Loki everybody knows of.

At the beginning of the film, in modern time, Thor is about to be inaugurated as a king of Asgard but the ceremony is interrupted by the Jotuns who invaded the realm in order to retain the Casket.
Thor is infuriated with such arrogance and gathers his brother, the Warriors Three and Sif in order to travel to Jotunheim and teach giants a lesson. The fight is interrupted by Odin who tried to solve the situation. The peace however could not be restored and Odin banishes Thor to Midgard, Earth. He also strips him of godly powers and sends Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer to Earth as well.
Odin falls into hibernation mode and Loki usurps the throne by changing his appearance so that he looks exactly like Odin.
In the meantime Thor finds himself incapable to lift the hammer as he is unworthy. He meets Jane Foster, a researcher. The two don’t get along that well due to huge cultural difference. Imagine your own face when some muscular dude tells you he’s the god of thunder and speaks like one of Shakespeare’s characters.
The film later tells us how Thor’s friends go searching for him in terms of bringing him back to Asgard and confronting Loki. Mischief master has his own plans for that and is determined to kill Thor while he is mortal. We witness a masterfully created build-up and a gorgeous ending which leaves any Marvel fan satisfied.

Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston who portrayed Thor and Loki respectively were created for their roles. Natalie Portman as Jane was very convincing as well. The general visual part looked enormously good for 2011 and quality sound supports greatly what we see on screen. The film sets up the future development of MCU and is greatly accompanied by the sequels. The reception speaks for itself – the film grossed almost $450 million, which is not a small amount of money. Another iteration of the MCU was also very warmly welcomed by the fans. Not only the Iron Man, right?
