9 floors up, in my small office, sitting at my desk, my knee hurt. That always happened when it rained (courtesy of a Japanese bullet on Guadalcanal, back in my uniformed days), and it was raining then. I could see it flailing against the window in waves. Cold, wet, and dark. I hate the rain. And from the looks of things, my new client wasn’t too happy with it either. Continue reading “Anime Night” »

Big Bang Theory is nine seasons of good humor, intelligent jokes, interesting plot twists and hilarious characters. Events take place in Pasadena, California when a geeky Doctor of Physics Sheldon Cooper and his not less geeky colleague from Caltech Leonard Hofstader begin to live together in one apartment as flatmates. And one day their new neighbor moves in across the hall. Her name is Penny; she has a temporary waitressing job who’s trying to become a Hollywood actress. Other members of their awkward and funny group include Howard Wolowitz, an engineer who leaves with his authoritative mother and Rajesh Koothrappali, an astrophysicist with Indian roots and girlish habits.
All four of them have the highest IQs and are very bright scientists. They achieved prominent results in their branch of research – but they are classical nerds that admire computer games, science fiction films, and TV shows, board games like Dungeons and Dragons, Comic Cons and cosplay. Their social life revolves around scientific achievements and spending time with each other. There are never any girls in their social group – these four are extremely bad at communication with other people, leave alone representatives of the beautiful part of humanity. Their crankiness makes them a lit bit of outcast.
Leonard, who lives with Sheldon, is a theoretical physicist who obtained his Ph.D. being 24 years old. He had a terrible childhood as his mother, a famous psychiatrist, didn’t pay him attention at all. He is a good friend – practically the only who can bear Sheldon and his weird behavior. When a new neighbor arrives, Leonard falls in love from the first sight – he understands that such a girl will never date such a nerd.
Penny is an average girl from Nebraska who hardly managed to finish school. She is friendly, talkative, and likes to drink a glass of wine or a couple of them. Her dream is to become an actress, so she visits numerous auditions, but it’s not working out. To pay her rent and bills, Penny works in a café, and she really hates her job. Starting to hang out with Leonard and Sheldon and getting used to their nerdiness, they eventually grow closer and get along very well. Also, Penny answers Leonard’s feelings – they start dating which leads to their marriage after a series of misunderstandings and conflicts.
The geekiest character is Sheldon. Being a genius and child prodigy, he entered college in eleven years and got his Ph.D. in physics in sixteen. He can boast an eidetic memory – he remembers information in forms of pictures in his head – and having great analytical skills, Sheldon is surprised he hasn’t got the Nobel price yet. Despite being a brilliant scientist, he is naïve and needs constant help in everyday life. He has never had a girlfriend and considers physical contact disgusting. After he is introduced to Amy Farrah Fowler, a neuroscientist, Sheldon starts to understand what human romantic feelings look like.
Two other friends, Howard and Rajesh, are their closest friends though Sheldon’s always mocking their scientific achievements. Howard has a hilarious sense of humor and thinks that he is a womanizer, which is a big exaggeration. He starts dating Bernadette, a former waitress and a microbiologist which results in their marriage and a daughter. He is very proud that he was chosen to be a payload specialist on a space station. Raj has troubles in communicating with women – he literally can’t talk with them unless a drop of alcohol. With his feminine tastes and financial support from his wealthy family in India, he is often mocked by his friends.
