After the screaming had stopped, they’d decided that staying in one room together was the best idea. Or well, Alicia had wanted to retreat to her room to process alone what had happened outside the front of their house (and then try calling Matt again), but had been told by her mother that staying together was the best idea. Alicia had thought to argue, but instead offered a deal – she would stay in the living room with them if her mom would tell her what the hell was going on. New faces, new scenery, new twist to the story and the good old dead pals that keep walking the walk just like we want them to. “Fear The Walking Dead” is the spin-off series for the almighty “The Walking Dead” and tells us a completely different story. For the years we have spent with the original series, much was forgotten, and lines were blurred. The spin-off was set to do the word it is set in a proper justice.
Remember that moment when Rick wakes up in the original and starts discovering the new world order all by himself, and we don’t know what happened? This time it’s all different, and we can watch how it all happened, day by day. The authors make sure to raise the immersion bar to the maximum, and while it’s hard to get to use to new faces in the usual setting, the actors quickly make us forget about the drastic difference. The importance of human behavior is covered greatly in the series. We watch how a person is trying to reason with their zombie relatives or loved ones multiple time. We witness the confusion, horror, and skepticism as it is, all in one bottle. The Walking Dead veterans might have been yelling at the screen that the granny one of the characters was trying to talk to won’t get better and survive the virus. However, the understanding of the rules of this world comes quickly due to well-written story and great effort from the cast.
It won’t be long until the first people you just started to care about will die miserably and the tears will fall again. Drama, suspense and overall engagement of the viewer are top-class.
One might compare the series to its “older brother” and find some downfalls, rightfully so. However, there is no denying that the change of scenery was necessary for the franchise and the spin-off perfectly filled the gap between the seasons of the original story. We abandon Rick and his struggle for survival and food for a change. Instead, we are granted with a completely different approach, with millions of scared people, military, tanks, buffer zones and thousands of scientists. Combined effort to save humanity is visible, yet methods are harsh. Many of the inhabitants are taken, even if they are not infected. Nobody knows nothing. Fear rules the streets, reflecting the name of the show and its emotional cover.
Chris, Nick, and Alicia are one of the main heroes, the teenagers that try to survive along with their parents. This is the moment when everybody is sincerely hoping that the fever after the bite would wear off. The population massively turns into the walkers, and the characters meet people they would never meet in the normal life. Unexpected salvation and treacherous attacks are all over the place. Everything that we love the franchise for starts kicking in. The viewer realizes that there is Rick from the main show somewhere, lying unconscious and is yet to experience the horror of the situation.
The traditions that were set by the main series are kept intact, the world operates smoothly, and the story does not raise the eyebrows of misunderstanding. The characters are alive and perform their roles in a bigger picture without the feeling that the universe accidentally adjusts itself to fit the needs of the heroes. Fairly good critical response and a warm welcome from the fans is the perfect indicator that the show was much needed and adjusted the balance between the two storylines, split between the two shows. However good the story is covered, more room for fan fiction is always in place, right?
