Hollywood has already used the Superman character in films way too many times. Now it’s the women’s time to boast their strength and endurance. Supergirl is a new superhero action TV series released in 2015. It’s based on the comic character Kara Zor-El from the DC comic universe. She’s actually the cousin of Superman and the last representative of the Kryptonians. Knowing that her planet is doomed, her parents sent her away to Earth to get in touch with the cousin. Unfortunately, when she was flying to Earth in the spacecraft, her planet, Krypton, exploded which knocked it off course. She had been stuck in the Phantom Zone for 24 years. At last, the spacecraft got away from that territory, but she remained a 13-year old girl that left her dying planet many years ago.
Upon arrival on Earth, she manages to meet her cousin, Superman, and he finds Kara a new home, the Danvers family. Being his cousin, Kara shares the same supernatural powers and vulnerability to Kryptonite. During a long period of time, she kept her abilities in secret without an intention to expose them. After 11 years of life on earth, Kara finally shows her abilities and becomes the Supergirl. She revealed her supernatural abilities in an attempt to prevent a disaster and people honored with a position of National City’s protector. Superman considers her to be the most powerful person on the planet. She can leap tall constructions, outspeed bullets, break walls with bare hands, etc. In her ordinary life, Kara is working in media with Cat Grant, the head of CatCo Worldwide Media. She is known as “the Queen of all Media” and a very demanding boss.
Accidentally Kara finds out that the criminals from her native planet are hiding on Earth among humans. Among them, there is an evil twin sister of her mother, Astra, who wants to destroy our world. She starts to investigate suspicious events happening in the city and with her step-sister, Alex Danvers, who also possess supernatural powers, exposes a Martian criminal who has been pretending to be a human for fifty years. This triggers a series of struggles and fights with other sinister villains hiding on Earth and posing a threat to the people. Throughout the entire story, Kara tries to keep a balance between her life of a superheroine and newfound human relationships. Some chemistry is developing between Kara and James Olsen, a former photographer who now works in a position of her art director. It’s obvious that their feelings are mutual – Kara has set her priorities, and the first place is already taken by a career in a new organization.
The second season is dedicated to cooperation between Superman and Supergirl. Kara and her companions have to deal with extraterrestrial invaders and investigate the activity of a suspicious organization called Project Cadmus. In this season, a classical Superman rival appears – Lex Luthor, with whom Superman has been struggling for years. And they have new guests from a planet situated not far from their destroyed home. Mon-El, a prince of that planet, comes to Earth looking for an asylum.
This TV series is an attempt to introduce more female heroines into the world of supernatural abilities which is completely crowded by superheroes of various kinds. Kara has as many powers as any typical comic hero and ready to show them!
